What happens if a car goes around with some “fake” traffic signs? (Like photo up ^^)
Just wanted to know if mapillary will map if the car stops or map every single photo
(shall I try with my car?)
credits photo and signs
officinefabri for the 5kmh sign
signquick for the 5mph sign (USA)
not my car / not my photo
I hope nobody will do that. I would guess Mapillary will just recognize it as a road sign.
Is that even legal to have a sticker which looks like a road sign?
No, it won’t due to semantic segmentation, which means that Mapillary tries to understand the image contents by labeling in multiple tiers. Simply put, traffic signs are usually on poles for which a probability score (if not multiple scores) is computed. However, this still does not mean that the system is completely foolproof.
It’s interesting, as I often capture while walking, and I’m pretty sure some signs will be captured right in front of a car (e.g. a truck or a lorry). In this case, it should recognize it as a sign. I’m not sure even I can do that each time correctly
So, the person with a sign on the car (image above) has to draw a pole to the sign, and that would be a worthy opponent.
I am not sure if it is that easy because Mapillary can also distinguish road maintenance, construction, and police vehicles that have traffic signs mounted to warn of construction zones and divert traffic around hazards. So, you would have to mimic a construction or police vehicle first, I guess. Mimicking a police vehicle could be illegal in some jurisdictions though, so please play safe.
