I’m using Mapillary v5.12.105 on a Pixel 6a. When using this version, the phone will overheat and it will halt after 5-10 minutes of usage.

Hi @musuruan, thank you for reporting. That’s a very serious issue, and we have to be careful when identifying the problem. The usual reason is overheated because of direct sunlight, which is common thing while driving and a phone under a windshield. Thus, I would kindly ask you to write on how you did the capture.

BR, Yaro

I’ve always captured images with my phone using the mount applied to the windshield. I’ve never experienced this issue before. The external temperature was around 22-24 °C so no that hot. Moreover, I turn off the screen while capturing.

I have always used Mapillary on my Huawei P30 Pro with excellent results (I am the second-largest contributor in Italy). However, with the latest version, I have noticed that even when I keep the power supply connected to the car’s cigarette lighter, the battery drains relentlessly. If this problem is not resolved, I believe I will have to stop contributing, as I cannot afford to have a drained phone upon completing my trips.

Thank you for reporting those issues. I’m already working on them, and target to include in the upcoming release. ETA end of the week, beginning of the next week - Open Testing. Next week - release.

I will give a bit of a broad answer, to explain each aspect of what we did and is possible. And what can be improved on the user’s side.

Temperature

  • With the highest brightness and the Google Maps navigation as a floating window the temperature stabilized on the level 42-43C. This is comparable with native camera or camera one while capturing a video. I was charging a phone with a less powerful charger.
  • With the dim screen enabled and an image flash disabled (both in settings) the temperature was stabilized at 39C, which was considered as acceptable results.

We can dig there and save more by disabling the map and performing less intensive GPS tracking. These changes will be introduced later I guess, but even this won’t change the situation drastically and the best way to prevent overheating is to remove the phone from direct sunlight or cover it when possible.

Battery
Each change we’ve applied didn’t influence battery drain too much. On average it goes from 100% to 90% in 1 hour on my devices. To improve that I have connected to a more powerful charger on a shorter cable. During 1 hour of capture, I went from 33% to 45% while the average temperature went 1C only (from 39C to 40C). The test was with no flash animation and a dimmed screen.

Testing
I have tested it on a build 5.13 which will be in Open Testing this week. The build has a faster image save process and a few minor performance improvements. The biggest change - Settings redesign, but each mentioned setting (dim screen, flash animation) is there.

Outro
I still keep at least two additional bigger tasks to save some computational power (which will decrease temp a bit and will increase battery lifetime a bit) but those will require more testing than I have time now. Will try to include it in the next release (end of June, beginning of July).

Hi @canfe we’d love to help sort this out for you. In addition to the testing @Yaro has been doing, it could be that there is a hardware problem. It should never be the case that the battery is decreasing while it’s plugged in and charging. I would recommend troubleshooting in the following way:

  1. Can you try replacing the usb cable you’re using for the charger? Perhaps you have another usb cable handy?
  2. If that doesn’t help, you might try replacing the cigarette lighter adapter you’re using (I’m assuming there isn’t a usb plug in your car?). Here’s a good review of recommended adapters: The 3 Best USB Car Chargers of 2023 | Reviews by Wirecutter , perhaps yours has become faulty with age. In particular this one is available in Amazon Italy for 25 EUR: https://www.amazon.it/dp/B08QSP4DC6
  3. It could also be a hardware issue with the phone itself, if you have another phone available, it would be good to test this also.

I apologize that there isn’t an easy answer to some of this, but we’d love to support you and help get to the bottom of this! We appreciate your contributions to Mapillary!

Hi @musuruan - while @Yaro continues to troubleshoot the issue, could you let us know if the overheating problem happened on a sunny day? Were you able to reproduce the same problem on a cloudy day?

Also when you say “it will halt” what do you mean exactly - does the phone shut down, or do you see an error message of some kind? If you test on a sunny day, could you try using the stock camera app on your Pixel 6a to record a video? Does the video record successfully or does it also suffer the same problem.

If it suffers the same problem, could you try running the air conditioner on the windshield to see if it still happens? The button generally looks like this:

Thank you for helping us troubleshoot this together!

Why did the app start to save to my phone’s memory instead of SD card??!!! Plus it is very slow. Slow start. When the app has opened, you tap on the cam icon and WAIT forever until it actually starts. When it starts it says that the phone is not oriented properly when it is. Using this new app is just plain pain in the ass. There is no indication on the screen when shooting. You cannot see how much juice is left. I don’t see a single reason to not return to the old app. And even better to the app of the pre-fb era. It is not not rocket science to take pictures with a given interval. Why does it have to be so slow, painful, and inconvenient?

Hi @Ser9ei999 - thank you for the feedback! Could it be that you have some settings misconfigured?

If you have an SD card on your phone, you’ll see a setting to save to SD card. You’ll also see a setting to “flash on capture” (which is default on).

The camera shouldn’t take a long time to start either. What Android phone and Android OS version are you using?

Oh yeah? I cannot use the settings in this new app. It’s a shame that new versions come out without proper testing.

The phone is Redmi Note 7 Pro on Android 10.

Oh no! Thank you for reporting this, we are going to look into this and get a fix out as soon as possible. cc:@yaro, @jvujnovic

Hi @Ser9ei999, unfortunately we can’t reproduce your issue yet, but we’re working on it. Now our best guess is that the OS reverts the text colors, and it is displayed as white (which is unreadable on the white background). If you could try a few things, this might help:

  1. Update to the latest app version (version 14, you have 13). Newer version has (an insignificant) color update, which might prevent this system trigger.
  2. Turn off dark/white mode (or disable this for the app) in the phone settings. This might be related to a Redmi issue here.

Apology for this experience, we’re searching for the phone and for the right settings to reproduce and eliminate the issue.

@Ser9ei999, did it work for you? Are you able to see the Settings screen now?

BR, Yaro

No, didn’t work.

Cannot login now and dont see why. So the question remains: why make app worse and worse? Whats the point?

And why is the interface in RUSSIAN now?

Apology for your experience.

UI. Till today we didn’t have any device where we’ve seen this behaviour, also we didn’t hear any report which will look like yours. That’s about “no text”.

About the language. the language is picked up by the system. The Russian language is one of the languages we support, and your system must pick up the language based on your phone’s settings. The language was added years ago, and if you’ve got it only now - that’s totally unclear why, and the only thing I can guess - you (or someone, like OS itself) updated your phone’s settings.

Just in case, did you try to uninstall the application, and install it again? I assume you did, but just in case.

Meanwhile I will thing what else can cause this behaviour.

cc @jvujnovic, any thoughts?
