I think that here “50/50”.
i always seem to get the same results. when i use my garmin glo underneath the windscreen the lines come out really neat:
then when walking it goes all over the place (these lines should be pretty much in the same place)
i usually have it in my hand or pocket when walking though so that might not help but im presuming the speed you are going in a car lets the app or gps device predict a lot better where you are going to be in a second or two
Part of the reason for apparently good signal on motorways is that the GPS device does a lot of cleanup and interpolation for you. The faster and straighter you go the better this works. Have you ever wondered why the track wobbles sideways but never backtracks out of order? If the errors are random the track should look like a birds nest. In my first GPS (1998) the tracks were like that with selective availability. Now the tracks are better but really disguised with filtering.
A fiberglass mast such as the sticks we use where I live to mark the edges of the driveway in the winter might work for that application.
