I can take pictures and view the map so that I can go where it hasn’t been mapped yet.
But the map does not “rotate” depending on the direction of travel.
Is it possible to activate this feature?

not sure if this is the same bug as in the ios app, but i sometimes have to go into the full-screen viewfinder UI and back to trigger compass orienting of the map.
Otherwise, you could try the method posted on the forum by @nunocaldeira for routing through uncaptured routes in OsmAnd
