Question 1 :
Why can it be important to use the smartphone with the lens sometimes to the left an sometimes to the right ?
There are two answers, three in my case.
Because sometimes it’s better to hold your phone in your left or right hand. If I hold it in my right hand with the lens to the left, then my hand is covering the lens. 
Shooting from a side window, you get a smaller angle and so more overlap.
