Upload image in mobile storage to Mapillary Mobile

Hi Mapillary team,

In Vietnam we are suffering the national disater of the typhoon Yagi. Lots of people take picture to upload to Facebook calling for help but it’s seem very hard to identify the location of the image.

We need a feature from Mapillary app that read/select image from the internal storage to upload through the Mapillary app. Both android and IOS.

I will try to broadcast the feature and persuade people install the app.

Thank you and regards.

@saigongiadinh1698 it looks like we added functionality to access the images on Android at least. Let me check with the team to see what the latest is on Android and iOS.

Thank you a lot.

I also would like to share some features that mights help the UX flow in the app.

  1. Allow paste lat, long to the search box like the web version and show the marker on the map

  2. Allow a hybrid layer combine both ESRI open satellite image and OSM in both web/mobile.

  3. New date filter bar in mobile like the web version.

Thank you and Mapillary team a lot.

Also found some bug in Facebook Messenger preview

@eneerhut sorry for confusing you. I misunderstood the intent. Enabling of the shared storage on Android will allow a user to access files taken by mapillary (through other apps), but Mapillary still wouldn’t be able to access images taken by other apps.

Thank you for the suggestions @saigongiadinh1698 - and we hope for the best for Vietnam and those impacted by typhoon Yagi.

To add to what @eneerhut and @Yaro were saying:

  1. We don’t currently have a way to upload images from mobile storage. Part of the problem is that images taken with the native camera apps may not have precise latitude/longitude information which is required for Mapillary. For example, on iOS location is not stored at all by the native camera, and on Android it may be stored but only impercise, not accurate location. Nonetheless we do want to enable this feature in future app versions for power users who use other camera tools like OpenCamera, etc. For now the best recommendation is to use the Mapillary app directly for capture, or to upload images through the Mapillary Desktop uploader.

  2. Thank you for the suggestions for supporting lat, long in the search box. As you mentioned this is supported by Mapillary web, but not in the mobile apps currently.

  3. We are working to bring back a satellite image layer to both Mapillary web and mobile. Initially that will be just satellite, but a Hybrid layer is also a great idea.

  4. Thank you for the suggestion of the filters, we will work to bring these to the mobile versions as well.

  5. On the message preview bug, @nikola are you tacking this one?
