Issue with Uploading 360º Videos in Equirectangular Format on Mapillary

I am facing an issue with uploading 360º videos in equirectangular format. After uploading, the video sequences are not displaying as expected, and the image resolution is set to 3840 x 2160, instead of the ideal 4320 x 2160 resolution for 360º high-resolution videos.

Additionally, the images extracted from the videos are not being correctly recognized as equirectangular. Instead of showing the expected 360º view, they are being treated as regular images without the correct projection.

Using ExifTool, I see that the videos have a 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution, with a 1/2 aspect ratio and metadata indicating that they are equirectangular, but Mapillary is not recognizing this information.

I would like to know if anyone else has encountered this problem and if there is any solution or configuration I need to apply before uploading the videos so that Mapillary correctly recognizes the format and resolution of the 360º videos.

Your video is in anamorphic format (it is a sub‑type of projection). So far, Mapillary supports flat format videos only. In other words, your video has the correct aspect ratio but only after projection. Or in yet other words, your image/video pixels are not squares. [QuickTime] ImageWidth : 4320 and [QuickTime] ImageHeight : 2160 displayed by exiftool are interpreted resolution numbers, not physical resolution numbers. [QuickTime] SourceImageWidth : 3840 and [QuickTime] SourceImageHeight : 2160 are the physical resolution of the video.

There are two possible fixes to this:

  • Mapillary can demorph anamorphic videos on the backend or in the upload apps
  • You demorph yourself or record your videos in flat format only (what is the preferred way of doing things in the first place)

Your 360° images have to have a physical resolution aspect ratio of 2:1 and be in equirectangular projection.
