How can I adjust the automatic capture interval (seconds between each photo) in the latest Mapillary app?

Hello everyone,

I’m using the latest version of the Mapillary app and I want to know if there’s a way to adjust the automatic capture interval (the number of seconds between each photo).

In older versions, I heard there were options to change the photo interval manually, but in my app I don’t see a clear setting. Right now it seems to capture automatically every few seconds, but I’d like more control — for example, to set it to 1 second, 2 seconds, or longer depending on my speed.

Hi @SohaibAhmadu,

Great question! In the recent versions of the Mapillary app, you won’t find a manual setting to adjust the number of seconds between each photo anymore—that’s because the capture scheduling has been automated.

Here’s how it works now:

  • The app dynamically handles capture timing using your device’s sensors, automatically detecting your movement and speed to optimize photo spacing. If you’re going faster (e.g., on a highway), it captures more sparsely, whereas in slower, detail-rich environments (like city streets) it captures more frequently to maximize useful coverage. (more info).

  • This means you don’t need to set specific time intervals (1 s, 2 s, etc.), and you don’t have to worry about adjusting capture settings based on whether you’re walking, biking, or driving -Mapillary handles it for you.

If you’d like more control, there’s still the “Allow manual capture” toggle available in settings, which lets you tap to take additional photos exactly when you want them.

Previously if folks set capture times that were too far apart Mapillary wouldn’t have enough information to do object detection or transition between images. Conversely if it was too close together you’d be capturing more images than necessary, making your upload time longer and using necessary device storage.

Let us know if this isn’t working for you or if you have any other questions.

It does not work in a train.

What specifically isn’t working @filipc ?

Thanks a lot @boris for the detailed explanation :folded_hands:

That makes sense now… I was looking for the manual interval setting because I thought it still existed in the latest app. Good to know that the app automatically adjusts capture frequency based on speed and movement.
