WikiShootMe! is a website that shows Wikidata items that do not have images. Using this guide you can add Mapillary pictures to them in a few clicks and help improve Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia too.
First, I suggest that you just select these options. If a Wikimedia commons image exists for the item, then it’s best to just copy the file name and use it, rather than uploading a new one.
Example for this elementary school in Tokyo. Only geotagged images are shown, if you go to the Wikipedia article, you can see that there are other images there too which could be used.
Copy the file name and paste it into the “Commons file name” field on the item, then select “Add to item.” Make sure to login to your Wikimedia account and login, authorizing the tools to perform actions on your behalf. Now if you enable the Wikidata (with image) layer, it will show as having the image associated with it.
Now here’s where we use Mapillary images to illustrate Wikidata items.
Find an item on the map and copy its coordinates by clicking the clipboard icon. I have enabled the Mapillary layer, but as you can see, there are not many images showing. This is an error: there are many more images than this.
Paste it into the search bar on Mapillary and zoom into the coordinates. As you can see here, there are many more images available.
Click through the sequences until you find a picture that depicts the item. Copy its URL, paste into the Mapillary 2 Commons 2 tool and press “Lookup.” Then, paste the Wikidata item name for the description and paste the username of the photographer into the username field. For this part, I right click on the username on the top right and copy/paste the link, then remove any of the unneeded URL bits.
Click on Upload. You will have to authorize the URL2Commons service to upload it if you haven’t already. It will instruct you to reload the page once it’s authorized in a new tab.
Once it is uploaded, copy the expected file name and paste it into the “Commons file name” field on the Wikidata item.
Click “Add to item” and your picture will be added to the Wikidata item, if the filename is correct.
Here is the Wikidata item I updated.
If there is a Wikipedia article associated with the Wikidata item, make sure to add it there as well.
Have fun!
