I cannot use “focus to infinity function” as its focal point is not in infinity. And when I switch it off then camera is refocusing when I turn on the wipers or there is some dirt on the windshield.
Hey @masterofnoroad! On iOS, we don’t use true infinity as, in our testing, it produced very poor results.
What we do instead is to take a series of images with different fixed focal lengths and then calculate the sharpness of each image to determine which focal length is the best for your particular device.
Each device is different, so a value of 0.7 might work for some devices, while some are sharper at 0.75 and so on.
This calibration only happens ONCE the first time you capture. You can reset this calibration by toggling the setting off and on again, then it will re-calibrate the next time you start a new capture session.
The idea with this fixed-focus mode is that it will not focus on your dirty windscreen (if calibrated properly).
good to know! When I noticed the blurry images I started to experiment with the infinity option. Unfortunately now I dont remember exactly what sequences were made with which option. Probably I started the calibration process when in closed space and phone camera was not able to focus into infinity.
I will check it when I get back my hands on the phone as for now its used somwhere else.
@Anders , @Yaro - remind me, the calibration should only happen when the user is travelling at a certain high speed (so that we have relative certainty that they are in fact driving and not inside, etc). Could you confirm the speed/verify this is working as intended?
@matsumi - the second link is after you re-enabled infinity focus right? Definitely looks like an issue. It might be device specific. For your Galaxy S20fe I would recommend keeping the infinity focus setting off to avoid this problem.
