Hi, I made my first sequence, but I experienced visible compression artifacts, something I wish to avoid (https://mapillary.com/map/im/1080504720903433). I took the images via the Mapillary app. The artifacts are visible on full resolution in the online sequence (@4080×3060 Pixels). Actually, at 1.5 MiB per image, the effect should be much weaker. How do I avoid this? Thanks in advance!
Hi @HylianTraveller - Generally we process images with ~90% jpeg quality. It looks like this image was taken around dusk which will lead to additional artifacts due to low light.
If you’d like to do a test, you can do the following:
- Take a couple new Mapillary photos and you should see them in your phone’s gallery. Upload this image to Google Drive to preserve the original quality
- If you’d like you can also take a photo of the same scene with your phone camera (generally phone camera image will be a bit sharper because they will take several exposures together and post-process). You can upload this one to Google Drive as well.
- Upload the Mapillary image and link to it here.
We can then compare these 2 or 3 images to see a side-by-side for quality.
Cheers,
- Boris, Product Manager, Mapillary
Thank you!
I did a sequence under different circumstances. When I took the first sequence, snow fell. Probably this caused the artifacts. The second sequence is better ![]()
