Uploading videos recorded on iOS

Hi everyone,

Is it possible to record a normal video on my iPhone, and then upload it to Mapillary using the Mapillary uploader?
I just tried to upload a video I recorded yesterday, but I get an error saying “No GPS data found in the given sources”.

Do you know if I can tweak something in my iPhone settings to be able to record the correct GPS data while filming. Or if that isn’t possible, would I be able to record a GPS track using an app like Go Map!! while recording the video, and upload that to the Mapillary uploader together?

@CasGroenigen iPhone does not record GPS data while recording video, so that’s why this isn’t working. Ideally you would use the Mapillary app on iOS to capture and upload. What is your use case for wanting to record it as video?

It is also possible to record video and upload a .gpx file separately in the desktop uploader (see the 3 dot overlow menu next to the video file and select “Add GPX file”)

Ah okay, thank you.

I was just trying different methods of capturing imagery to see what would give the most useable result

I will try it with recording a GPX file once to see what the results are

So, I tried this, and it worked to a certain extent. See the sequence here: Mapillary

But the images appear quite a bit more blurry than the video was, and the locations on the map don’t exactly line up with the actual locations. Especially when you go further into the sequence, it still displays frames from 100-200 meters ago.

Do you know how I could fix/resolve this for future uploads? I still have one video + GPX file ready to go to test it further.

Glad to see you got it working! It looks like the resolution is only 1080 x 1920 - and sampling images from video is generally going to be lower quality.

The suggestion for future uploads would be to use the Mapillary app which is optimized for high quality

Ideally I would like to record my bike rides through the app, but the phone mount I have on my bike doesn’t allow my phone to be placed horizontally, so that’s why I tried it this way, since you are unable to record sequences in the app when your phone is placed vertically.

Also, would it be possible for this sequence to be removed from the site again, since it displays the wrong location for the second half of the sequence (the location shown is a couple hundred meters back).

Makes sense. Yes, Mapillary app doesn’t allow recording vertically by design because the quality will likely be worse (generally you want to capture what’s on the left and right, not the ground and the sky). It’s a cool trial you did though!

You can request the capture to be deleted by following these steps: https://help.mapillary.com/hc/en-us/articles/4424873641106-Deleting-images-from-Mapillary
