Hello Mapillary Community,
I really enjoy taking photos for Mapillary and recently bought a gadget for my bike to make capturing easier. However, this gadget only works as a mobile holder. Could you please suggest a good tripod that would help me take better and more stable photos with my mobile?
Additionally, if the Mapillary team could provide a 360 photo device as support, it would be amazing. The prices of Insta360 cameras in Pakistan are very high, and unfortunately, I cannot afford one at the moment. With such a device, I would be able to contribute even more photos and expand Mapillary coverage in Pakistan.
Looking forward to your suggestions and support.
Hey!
I’ve been personally starting off with Mapillary and looking at getting a proper setup myself. From what I’ve found, when it comes to bumpy activities, the human body tends to be the best shock absorber for cameras. I take sequences with my smartphone in my car and have a mount straight on the Windshield. I treat Mapillary like I do OpenStreetMap editing. Any little helps, and having any sort of imagery versus none at all is great.
I’ve seen on Reddit discussions that people would use chest rig mounts or helmet mounts. This gives a bit more of a First-person view and provides some level of stability.
As for as the 360 device goes, not going to speak for the Mapillary team, but from my understanding, gear hand-out to users tends to happen via grants and promotions. Current promotions seem to be primarily in Europe and the USA at this time. Maybe in the future we could hope for one in South Asia. Those programs appear to be centered on highly urban developed areas at this time. I’m keeping an eye out myself from Canada. In the meanwhile, best suggestion I have (practically from what I’m doing) is to keep uploading sequences and building up stats and down the road, if any such program arises, apply for it with your pre-existing taken imagery demonstrating how well you’d be suited as a candidate versus someone who has less to no imagery.
Best of luck!
Really appreciate you sharing this! You’re spot on…. consistency and uploading whatever we can is way more important than having fancy gear at the start. I’ll keep building up sequences and maybe test out a chest or helmet mount too. Fingers crossed that one day promotions and grants expand to South Asia as well. Until then, I’ll just focus on contributing as much as possible. Thanks again for the helpful advice!
