Tbf, the api is there. It’s more of a question of Mapilio implementing a mapillary import tool. I did mention it to one of the founders, but don’t know if they’ve made any progress on that.
EDIT: got confirmation from that founder that it’s close to launching. Join their discord (you can find the link on their site) for updates
Thanks, joined the Discord last night, will have a look.
Cheers,
Chris
Hi @chris_debian,
I just wanted to clarify that mention product is not fork of Mapillary. They are shamelessly copycatting Mapillary.
Tbf… So is the nature of open source.
Whether we like the new application or not, as long as they comply with the licensing, that’s what software freedom is all about.
Chris
Yeah there are open source elements: mapillary_tools library, MapillaryJS, not sure what Mapilio is up to in terms of those… but Mapilio for awhile also copy and pasted the exact writing from the Mapillary website, like branding, product descriptions, etc, so I guess it’s quite literal as copy/paste or cloning in the non-software sense. The text has evolved some, since I only looked at it a few months ago when it was exactly matching. But no Mapillary systems architecture was forked in my knowledge, including algorithms used, in the way for example MapLibre is a fork of Mapbox (JS GL, Native). Of course, Mapillary open source tools are created to be open and used anywhere, for anything, according to license of the software, as well as the open license (CC-BY-SA) of the uploaded images.
Copy and pasting text from the website doesn’t sound very polite, especially when Mapillary/ Meta/ FB could easily deploy the lawyers!
I’m waiting to see what happens in the near future with Mapilio, as the benefits to OSM aren’t yet tangible, so I’ll concentrate my imagery collection elsewhere, for now.
Chris
We have same progress about this project?
I wonder about the business model of Openstreetcam. All those terrabytes of images now flowing from mapillary to osc have to be cloud hosted which will cost quite a lot as more users use their platform.
