Photosphere without 360 camera

Hi all,

Is there a viable solution to create 360 photos with a regular smartphone in 2026? I have tinkered with GCam ports, but I can’t believe this is the only android app in the whole world that can produce 360 photos from stitching. Is there an alternative? Is it in Mapillary roadmap to implement this feature in the app?

Hi @sonic3738 - producing a 360 with a smartphone requires the user to be stationary and panning all the way around. Mapillary requires sequences of images as the user is moving along a street, and stopping to produce each one would be a bit of a drag, so its not something we’ve focused on.

That being said, I do think its technically feasible to shoot from both front and rear cameras at the same time (see recent discussion).

Hypothetically someone could maybe design a selfie stick or mount which turns a phone 90 degrees at regular intervals, the phone then captures from both cameras at the same time, and the output is post-processed to be stitched into a workable 360. It might be an interesting project, but probably not a focus for us at the moment.

Thank you for your reply Boris. It is indeed a bit of a drag to stop for each node. But I find photosphere so much better than flat pictures that it’s worth the trouble in my opinion .

“[…] to be stitched into a workable 360.” —> That’s precisely the point of my thread: HOW to stitch flat pictures into a photosphere? Google Camera is the only option I’ve found so far, and I find it hard to believe that’s the only solution in the whole wide world. So if any user knows an alternative app, that would be great!
