Meine Mapillary Praxsiserfahrung mit der Insta 360 X3

Nach einigen Kilometern Versuch und Irrtum, ist mein aktueller Kenntnisstand heute folgender.
Tipp:

  • Um brauchbare GPX Spuren zu erzeugen, benötigst Du unbedingt ergänzend die Insta Action Remote Fernbedienung, hierbei ist zu beachten dass die Action Remote jeweils über den neuesten Firmwarestand verfügt, im Gegensatz zur App und Insta-Kamera, wird ein mögliches Update nicht automatisch vorgeschlagen. Damit die Systemzeit Gerägerüberreifend synchronisiert ist, zum automatischen setzen der Zeit, vor Aufnahmen, eine kurze Koppelung mit der Smartphone App vornehmen. Während sich die Insta 360 X3 am PKW Dach befindet, habe ich die Action Remote ganz vorne auf dem Armaturenbrett platziert, dort gibt es meist einen guten GPS Empang, und eine gute Bluetooth Verbindung zur Insta. Damit die Fernbedienung dort stabil liegt, habe ich extra einen zweiten Insta360 85 cm unsichtbarer Selfiestick spendiert. Für Aufnahmen welche ich zu Fuß erstelle, verwende ich dann diesen Stick, die Action Remote ist dabei bereits am richtigen Platz montiert.

  • Die beste Bildqualität erfordert ein MacBook, nur dieses unterstützt das Format ProRes 422.

  • Beim Rendern wird ein M1 MacBook etwas heiß, Tipp: stelle dieses daher dieses während dem Rendervorgang auf ein Drahtgerüst und montiere, darunter einen gebrauchten PC Lüfter. Das schont das MacBook.

  • Das Format ProRes 422 erzeugt unglaubliche Datenmengen, ich empfehle daher einen externen USB-C SSD Speicher (Getestet: SanDisk Extreme 55D mit ein Terrabyte Kapazität).

  • Wer sich auf ProRes Datenmengen einlässt, benötigt für erträgliche Uploadzeiten einen Internetzugang mit wenigstens 50 Mbit Upload Kapazität.

  • Nach dem Hochladen lösche ich die lokale ProRes 422 Datei. Ich archiviere jeweils nur Insta Kamera Rohdate. Damit ich mich in diesen Dateien zurechtfinde, ergänze ich diese mit den beim exportieren erzeugten GPX Spuren.

  • Aufnahmen starte ich ausschließlich bei PKW Stillstand Meine Erfahrung hat ergeben dass die GPS Spurenaufzeichnung durch Unterbrechungen während der Fahrt manchmal aus dem tritt kommt, manchmal hierdurch die GPS Aufzeichnung der Folgeaufzeichnung sogar verloren geht. Ich unterbreche daher eine Insta- Aufnahme während der gesamten Fahrt nicht. Mittels Insta 360 Studio erzeuge ich später, Fahrtstrecken Segmente mit einer Dauer von jeweils maximal 5 Minuten. Ich lasse Segmente hierbei etwas überlappen. Durch die identische Lage findet man so die Fortsetzung leicht.

After a few kilometers of trial and error, my current state of knowledge is as follows.
Tip:

  • In order to create usable GPX tracks, you absolutely need the Insta Action Remote remote control. While the Insta 360 X3 is on the roof of the car, I placed the Action Remote right at the front of the dashboard, where there is usually good GPS reception and a good Bluetooth connection to the Insta. To ensure that the remote control is stable there, I specially added a second Insta360 85 cm invisible selfie stick. For shots that I take on foot, I use this stick, with the Action Remote already mounted in the right place.

  • The best image quality requires a MacBook, only this one supports the ProRes 422 format.

  • An M1 MacBook gets a bit hot when rendering, tip: place it on a wire frame during the rendering process and mount a used PC fan underneath. This protects the MacBook.

  • The ProRes 422 format generates incredible amounts of data, so I recommend an external USB-C SSD storage device (tested: SanDisk Extreme 55D with a terabyte capacity).

  • Anyone who wants to use ProRes data volumes needs an internet connection with at least 50 Mbit upload capacity for tolerable upload times.

  • After uploading, I delete the local ProRes 422 file. I only archive the raw Insta camera data. To help me find my way around these files, I supplement them with the GPX tracks created when exporting.

  • I only start recordings when the car is stationary My experience has shown that the GPS track recording sometimes gets out of sync due to interruptions during the journey, and sometimes the GPS recording is even lost during the subsequent recording. I therefore do not interrupt an Insta recording during the entire journey. I later use Insta 360 Studio to create segments of the journey, each lasting a maximum of 5 minutes. I let the segments overlap a little. Because they are all in the same position, it is easy to find the continuation.

Hi, thanks for workflow. Just two things I was wondering about:

  1. Why did you decide to use video instead of photo time-lapse? (5,7k instead of 12k resolution)
  2. What is the benefit for you using ProRes?

Ansonsten finde ich es beeindruckent, was du für einen Aufwand in die Datennachbereitung steckst.

  1. Laut Insta 360 X3 Bedienungsanleitung gibt die Kamera in Verbindung mit der Insta Remote Fernbedienung im 5,7K 360° /HDR Video Modus, eine für Mapillary Zwecke nutzbare GPX Spur aus.

  2. Ich nutze das Insta Studio Exportformat ProRes 422 da ich Aufnahmen neben Mapillary auch noch für andere Zwecke nutze. ProRes 422 kann man nur per Apple MacBook erzeugen. Zum Uploaden (nicht bei G - ja bei M) verwende ich standardmäßig aber lieber den Mapillary PC Desktop Uploader, dieser läuft in meiner Umgebung stabiler als die Apple Variante.

Anmerkung lohnt sich der Aufwand: Nahtlose Aufnahmen über große Distanzen (30 Minuten) : Die Anzahl an 30 Minuten Blöcken, ist bei der Insta 360 X3, A. durch die Größe der SD-Karte, und B. durch die Akkukapazität begrenzt. Ein Limit setzt aber der Mapillary Desktop Upload er. Videos die länger als ca. 5 Minuten dauern, erzeugen beim Hochladen (G-und-M) eine Fehlermeldung z.b. “Interner Fehler”. Oftmals wird behauptet, dass der gegenüber anderen Kameras bei der Insta Kamera erforderliche Software Export ein Nachteil sei, tatsächlich zeigt sich, dass nur über diesen >5 Minuten Videos mit zeitlichen Überlappungen erzeugt werden können. Nahtlose Mapillary Spuren über große Distanzen, das kann daher aktuell nur die Insta 360.

  1. According to the Insta 360 X3 user manual, the camera, in conjunction with the Insta Remote control in 5.7K 360° /HDR video mode, outputs a GPX track that can be used for Mapillary purposes.

  2. I use the Insta Studio export format ProRes 422 because I use recordings for other purposes besides Mapillary. ProRes 422 can only be created using an Apple MacBook. For uploading (not with G - yes with M) I prefer to use the Mapillary PC Desktop Uploader by default, which runs more stable in my environment than the Apple version.

Note is it worth the effort: Seamless recordings over long distances (30 minutes): The number of 30 minute blocks on the Insta 360 X3 is limited, A. by the size of the SD card, and B. by the battery capacity. However, the Mapillary Desktop Upload sets a limit. Videos that last longer than approx. 5 minutes generate an error message when uploading (G-and-M), e.g. “Internal error”. It is often claimed that the software export required for the Insta camera is a disadvantage compared to other cameras, but in fact it turns out that only >5 minutes of videos with time overlaps can be created. Seamless Mapillary tracks over long distances is currently only possible with the Insta 360.
