Further to Gopro Hero 13 en 15 characters - #3 by filipc : https://gopro.com/en/be/shop/cameras/learn/hero13black/CHDHX-131-master.html?tab=tech-specs doesn’t list “GPS”? Although it may be available in one of the remote control modules.
From the info I can find online, 13 just seems like 12 plus minimal changes and readded GPS. Same sensor and processor, so only changes would be artificially locked behind software. I cannot find any info on how good the GPS actually is. I do not think it is dual band. From what I can tell, it’s the same “GPS9” as earlier 9+ models. It says 10 Hz in spec, but that seems to be a “lie” and interpolated. So it’s likely just as occasionally extremely horrible as before. I cannot see myself using it at its current state when dual-band GPS phones are so much better now.
I’ve a Hero 13 since this weekend, but the Windows version of the uploader can’t read the GPS info inside. With a extractor tool it’s possible to get the GPX file. @boris is the Hero 13 not supported?
@nikola - does the current version of Desktop Uploader already include the mapillary_tools version which added Hero 13 support? Or is that coming in the upcoming release?
Hero 13 support is coming in the next release which will be out soon.
That is better than never.
An update from my side; I returned the Hero 13, the GPS is buggy as hell, not workable. Not even with a clear sky it is not possible to get a GPS lock, sometimes it takes 10 minutes and when you’re moving the GPS is gone again. It drives me crazy. The GPS of the Hero 9 and Max are working fine on the same route.
On Reddit are also complaints about the GPS reception of the 13. I ordered a Max 2025, curious if that one is working fine… .
Hero 13 has different hardware than the 11 and 12, the 12 doesn’t have GPS. The 13 has a new type of battery. The CMOS sensor is still the same, but the GPS hardware is less than the 11 or before, unfortunately…
Hi everyone,
Are there any updates regarding GPS support for the GoPro Hero 13 Black on Mapillary?
I’ve recorded a lot of videos while cycling in Albania — especially around Shkoder and Tirana — using my Hero 13 Black. However, I’ve noticed that the GPS data from the camera is either missing or not recognized when I try to upload the footage to Mapillary.
I would really like to contribute all these videos, but I want to make sure the GPS metadata can be properly extracted or used.
Thanks in advance, and I’m happy to share more info or test any solutions!
Best,
Denis
Hi Denis,
You’re not getting a message that the GPS is too noisy? That’s also a possibility. If there is no GPS data in the video than probably GPS is not activated in the Hero 13.
I’m using my second Hero 13, the first one had a very poor GPS reception, and was loosing the GPS reception all the time, the second one is good. There a lot of quality issues with GoPro unfortunately, I’m also using the second Hero 9, the first one was corrupting the video data.
The desktop app will recognize GPS in the video data, just put the files in the app and it should work, if not than see my previous comment of GPS disabled (or defective Hero 13).
Yeah, GoPro’s potential hardware feature set vs. manufacturing quality and product QA standards (or their lack of) are all over the place. For example, the MAX’s firmware could be most favorably described as incomplete at best. The MAX does not hold white balance (even when set to fixed) and hangs up randomly. Both things are purely firmware related. I have already lost two long sequences just because the MAX froze during recording. You have no way of knowing when it freezes because it does not indicate so on the display. It is only when you press the button again to stop recording you realize that the firmware has hung up.
Abysmal…
I’ve got 2 GoPro Max devices (old one and the 2025 one) and both of them working without any issues. The Hero 13 is een hot head and shuts down a lot times during driving (inside the car), the Hero 9 is still the best GoPro I have, doesn’t overheat and works all the time. Also the Maxies.
I would trade the MAX for a decent HERO 9 anytime because it would suit my needs far better than the MAX can. Maybe my MAX suffers from loose contacts on the board or something because, as you have already mentioned, GoPro’s device quality apparently is a gamble.
