Your suggestion on both a personal score and a grid score which are then combined for a final score is definitely something for us to consider.
Regarding two images separated by one km, these would not count as 1 UKM because this images should be cut into sequences every 200m. In this particular example it would count as 0 UKM. Basically 200 m is the max distance you can have between two images.
