Camera mounts for bicycle

No, it does not shake. If you have enough sunlight the exposure time is short enough to prevent blurry pics, in dense forest, low light conditions the vibrations are of course not optimal and can cause more blurry pics. Please check out my profile to see the results.

Hi,
please comment this design. I made it for my Galaxy S6, mostly for spontaneous mapping and less for those mega sessions. On tarmac it behaves very well, offroad I get a vibration interrupt now and then. Unsure about the rolling shutter phenomenon, maybe someone could point this out on a typical picture sometime?

I find it very convenient to just slide in the holder and get started - the clip always stays on the steering bar.

I think a little rubber band bondage helps a lot.

When printed on, it could be a suitable giveaway.

It looks nice. It is a great feature that it can be permanently mounted and is easy to use.
Rolling shutter blur is seen as parts of the image being blurry and others not - often in horizontal bands. Mapillary
a decent example. You can see that parts of the bush is ok sharp, while parts is blurry. If it was motion blur or focus blur, all of the bush would have been blurred.

Hey @mkw - how did you build this? Looks really convenient to use.

Hi Katrin,
it’s 3D- printed. I am glad You like it.

Worked fine, even on cobble stone streets today.

@mkw looking good! How did the sequences turn out - have you uploaded yet? Feel free to share links. =)

Just found a great example of rolling shutter blur: Mapillary

Hej,
please see a sequence of pics taken with the cycle mount. I apologize for the rickety ride: it was in the middle of the christmas shopping rush - not so easy to find a straight mapping route in the city. Light conditions as expected on a scandinavian midwinter afternoon. In any case, You see there have been cobblestones and plenty of other vibration to the mount.

Let me know what You think.

@Tryl: Thanks for the rolling shutter example - I see exactly what it is now.

I did not scroll though all of my sequence, but to me it is more an overall blur than only in regions of the images. Which is not neccessarily better than rolling shutter, but probably easier to identify and filter away.

@mkw I think it’s pretty good! =) At least all of my own bike rides have turned out with a lot more blurry photos. Also on Lund’s cobblestones

Have you tried a rubber band ?

@filipc do you mean that a rubber band could help with the vibrations as well? I haven’t thought of that, I only thought it would help secure the phone. But maybe if it’s tight enough it can also help stabilise it a little bit - do you have experience?

You could compare it to a sports bra. For securing the 700 euro device, I use a small loop lanyard which I cleverly attach to the Otterbox.

I cannot place sharp pictures here. And small ones only one by one. After a lot of photo misery, I placed the pictures of my bicycle gear on my Google drive. The red electric twisted wired loop on the steer serves to hold my Ricoh Theta S camera on its pole.

There are some practical tests done with bicycles in order to see what measures can be done to improve comfort for the driver on bad road surfaces like cobble stones (and thus relevant for mapillary contributors: get less blurry pictures). For normal bicycles the most simple and cheap advise is to reduce the tire pressure around 3.5 bar to get most comfort with acceptable risk to get a flat tire.

I have seen this advise worked (had my pressure around 5.0 bar to have less resistance for pedalling , but for making pictures it is better to reduce the tire pressure as far as possible.

There do exist bigger and stronger smartphone mounts than mine. But I have not found a shop.

I have a new bicycle mount for my 4 cams setup

I’m curious, what level of quality in these photos for mapping are y’ll looking for? Does this sequence on my bike fit the bill for being good enough?
