Community Update - Announcing The Mapillary Camera Grant Program 3.0
We’re excited to launch our latest Camera Grant Program 3.0, built to support contributors worldwide with the gear to capture high-quality 8K 360° imagery.
We want to support you, our community, in capturing meaningful coverage and improving open geospatial data for everyone. So we are inviting you to sign up for a chance to receive a GoPro MAX 2 bundle.
What’s in the kit?
• GoPro MAX 2 (8K 360 video)
• Extension pole (4ft / 1.22m)
• 2x Enduro batteries
• 64GB SD card
What kind of AI generated mutant GoPro model is that? Note the second lens on the side (above the power button). I have never imagined that GoPro 360° cams could move eyes like humans can do.
Right, I would also love to see Camera Grant Program stats, not for the sake of bragging or competition but just to see how effective I am compared to others. My current bottlenecks actually are SD card space (or storage space in general), post‑processing speed, and upload speed. I can usually capture much faster than I can process and upload, so my backlog grows faster than anything else. But with my latest captures, I have already adjusted my workflow to reduce post‑processing time. However, the effects are only going to become apparent after I have cleared my existing backlog.
Having said that, 64 GB SD card space seems like a bit tight, especially for an 8K camera like the GoPro MAX2. However, I am also aware of the latest price hikes for everything memory related due to the ongoing crazy AI hype. It hurts everybody.
I really appreciate that Mapillary is going full steam ahead with the next Camera Grant Program iteration. Happy mapping!
Since MAX2 does not come with either a hard case nor a pouch like MAX did, I would consider buying at least a silicone case with touch screen plastic protector sheets. So far, I have been using the pouch that came with MAX for MAX2; not ideal but better than nothing. You really want to protect your gear whenever you put it in a bag, backpack, or luggage. Things rumble in there a lot! I have always protected my cameras and it always turned out to be worth the effort. This silicone case looks interesting, though I have not bought nor tested it yet.
You can get the same set in different parts of the world. Just search for “HSU”.
I do not endorse this or any other particular product. It just caught my attention because it comes with a replacement battery compartment hatch that enables to connect a USB C charging cable without the need to take off the silicone case. It may be worth the investment, especially for contributors who capture from a car and want their MAX2 to supply with power when mounted on the car roof. I do not know how well this hatch works in the rain but the detailed product images would suggest that the designers have thought it through. Having said that, you may void your warranty when you replace the battery compartment hatch, so you have to assess your risks.
GoPro has an official mini hard case accessory for MAX2 that lets you have the extensible/selfie stick always mounted. Very convenient when capturing on foot or by bike and protects your MAX2 in the bag/backpack.
Note that the case closes with lens caps on! Great!
So, I am going with that.
Update: Shoot, out of stock on A…on.
No more tripod for car mounting? (OK, previous one was not famous but, still…).
Go point to move to Max 2. Picture timestamps are now provided at millisecond including GPS Time. It would provide much easier way to synchronize with external GNSS sources like RTK.
We are constantly reviewing applicants, I appreciate you taking the time to complete the form and we will reach out if you have been selected! Thank you!
Yes, you get sub‑second fractions but beware what you get exactly. RTC sub‑second fractions do not necessarily equal GPS clock signal fractions, unless you synchronize the RTC to the GPS clock signal. Sadly, there is still no GPS clock signal to RTC synchronization out‑of‑the‑box (in the menu). Users are expected to install GoPro Labs firmware and configure SYNC=1. Is there anybody who does QA at GoPro at all or can engineers just push everything out the door?
