For me, it is interesting how people contribute and what camera models are used. It looks like smartphones and action cams are used quite often. It would be interesting to see, how many different camera models were ever used for Mapillary. Maybe those statistics exist 🙃.

What was the most weird camera model you found?

My first Mapillary captures were done with a Logitech C500 USB webcam. (2016) The resolution was 1280x1024 pixels and was connected to the laptop on the vehicle front seat. The GPS device was connected to the same laptop. The actual camera was silicon rubber mounted on the inside of the windscreen and had a foil appendage to reduce glare and reflections. There was also a black cloth cover on the dashtop and flat black cardboard on the side pillars.

I currently use 2 old Samsung phones, a Blackvue dashcam and a noname rear facing dashcam.

Yes very weird…

Tesla built-in dashcam is pretty weird, especially the side cameras 🙂 The quality is pretty bad as those cameras are mainly used for driver assistance, and the dashcam functionality is just something they added through a software update. The weird colors are due to unusual color filter arrays on the sensors - I believe it’s RCCB on my car (the green filters are removed for better sensitivity at night). @HylianTraveller - not explicitly about camera models, but here is some recent grouping by camera type from Mapillary. Note that a large portion of uploads (~40%) don’t have exif data, so we are unable to classify them reliably.

That’s just 10 years ago. Interesting how technology advanced 🙂

I think we had a similar thread about taking pictures with BYD cameras. It’s a pity the image quality isn’t the best😅

That’s an interesting statistic, indeed 😃

An interesting statistic to see, though perhaps without sufficient context. Are these the number of uploads in Q3 2026 or the number of sequences captured in Q3 2026? Might be a worthwhile blog post topic, that is if you can find the time to write it without revealing business secrets. 😉

Stories like these make curious :D. I look at different places on Mapillary, but, what is to be expected, the broad majority is boring. Sometimes, you get to know new brands, like Girocam, Tecno or Ulefone. Unfortunately, some models get obscured, so the exif model is Trimble MX7 or TMX, which software, not hardware. One user has a camera model that is a vehicle. Very interesting. I use a Sony ILCE-7RM6, which needs manual adding of geocoordinates, as the model has no built-in GPS module 🙂

well, they used a raspberrypi camera and other cameras here:

> I’m imagening something like taginfo but for Mapillary. Where you can see how many images have been made using which camera. But tbh, just seeing a complete lists of camera’s that have been used on Mapillary, with a way to filter by them would be interesting. Now for example, There is a possibility that someone made imagery using that new Kandao Qoocam 8K. But there is no way to tell because we can’t search for it. Camera’s a wish to know if they have been used on Mapillary: Insta360 ONE …

btw now I’m seraching via API or whatever I can find
