Cairo, Illinois' Mini-Detroit

Some of the images off my Samsung Galaxy from my recent wanderings through Cairo, IL are up. Cairo ( KAY-roh ) is a storied city in the US. It’s claim to fame is being at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers.

Cairo is one of the many storied river towns that never quite took off. It was arguably dead by the 1960s. Today it’s become Detroit in miniature.

Too bad Mapillary wasn’t around a 100 years ago. It would be nice to see the changes over time. He’s a picture by a photographer from 2012 of the area in focus below, http://photos.legendsofamerica.com/il-cairo/h1a6a2e63#h1e16260.

You can geotag old images manually, add approximate date and upload them to Mapillary. I have a couple in the area of https://www.mapillary.com/app/?lat=55.39588239994885&lng=10.408018499944278&z=17&pKey=Fp0U9oxyJIkQNDJ3NzFiiA&focus=photo and @neogeografen has done a lot in Copengen, Denmark.

@tryl, thank you. I didn’t think of that that. I suppose there’s plenty in the public domain, it’s just a matter of where, when and being fairly certain about what the GPS data would’ve been.

I’ll put that on my list of things to follow-up on. Seems like that would be a big contrast for a place like Cairo, IL.
